COMMENT: The countries which are joined together in the European Monetary Union and adopted the euro as their common currency in 1999 are: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. The conversion of these currencies to the euro was fixed on 1st January 1999 at the following rates: Austrian schilling: 13.7603; Belgian & Luxembourg franc: 40.3399; Finnish Markkɜ: 5.94573; French franc: 6.55957; German mark: 1.95583; Irish punt: 0.787564; Italian lirɜ: 1936.27; Dutch guilder: 2.20371; Portuguese escudo: 200.482; Spanish pesetɜ: 166.386. The CFA franc and CFP franc were pegged to the euro at the same time.
